What Makes Our BJJ Gym the Best in the Area?
- Mike Rethmeyer is the highest-ranking Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt (4th degree) currently teaching in the Metro East Illinois area, including O’Fallon, Belleville, Fairview Heights, Collinsville, Shiloh, Edwardsville, IL, and surrounding communities.
- Unlike many affiliate academies where a brown belt, or even a purple belt will be teaching class or running the dojo, Coach Rethmeyer personally leads every class, with the exception of rare occasions such as vacation or competition.
- As the longest-established BJJ academy in the Metro East, BJJ Lifestyle Academy is home to more black belts than any other gym in the area. What does that mean for students? Quite simply, iron sharpens iron. With six additional black belts regularly training on the mats, it’s not uncommon to have two to four black belts rolling during open mats or participating in a single class, providing hands-on guidance, real-time feedback, and invaluable technical insight.
- The proof is in the results. Submission Challenge Tournament is the only BJJ competitions consistently held on the Illinois side of the river—and BJJ Lifestyle Academy has claimed the team title three years in a row.

Simply select a time that works for you from our schedule above, and show up ready to learn and have fun!
*Please note that you will be required to sign a release on-site prior to participating in the class, and if you are a minor you will need a guardian’s signature. Don’t worry if you don’t have a Gi or No Gi gear just yet, just wear comfortable athletic gear without pockets or zippers for your first class. We can’t wait to meet you and introduce you to the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. See you soon!
